Mahatma Gandhi was an India born civil rights leader who led India to independence and was an inspirer of many other civil rights movements around the world. Gandhi led many civil disobedience protests including his famous Dandi Salt March. He was a main activist against the cruel British rule in India that imposed many harsh taxes on the indians, most of which couldn't pay them and went into poverty as a result.
He was named 'Man of the Year' by Times Magazine in 1930 as well as being a runner up to Albert Einstein as 'Man of the Century' in 1999. He was nominated for the Noble peace prize 5 times from 1937 through to 1948 but never received it, this was later regretted by the Nobel Committee who stated it was due to a deeply divided nationalistic opinion at the time.
